Duke University Tops the Rankings
Duke University has secured the top position in the Associated Press men’s college basketball rankings for the second consecutive week, marking the school’s record-setting 149th time at No. 1. This week, Duke garnered 55 out of a possible 59 first-place votes after dominating opponents Notre Dame and then-No. 11 Virginia with convincing scores.
Strong Defensive Performance
The Blue Devils showcased their strong defense throughout the week, particularly since their defeat to North Carolina on February 7, limiting their last six competitors to an average of just 57 points. They began their campaign with a staggering 100-56 victory over Notre Dame, which spotlighted the Fighting Irish’s worst home loss in over a century. Following that, Duke further cemented its position by decisively defeating Virginia 77-51, ensuring they will enter the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament as the top seed.
Top Rankings Overview
In the rankings, Arizona takes the No. 2 spot with four first-place votes, buoyed by an 84-61 win over No. 14 Kansas that clinched a share of the Big 12 regular-season championship. Michigan, UConn, and Florida complete the top five.
Notable Movements in the Rankings
In a notable shift this week, No. 10 Texas Tech saw a significant rise, jumping six places thanks to victories against Cincinnati and Iowa State. Meanwhile, Michigan State climbed five spots after edging past Purdue and dominating Indiana by 13 points. Miami (Ohio), remaining the only undefeated Division I team, celebrated a two-spot leap to rank 19 for the first time since the 1952-53 season’s No. 12 ranking.
On the other hand, No. 15 Purdue faced a major decline, tumbling seven spots after back-to-back defeats against Michigan State and Ohio State. Gonzaga dropped three places after falling 70-59 to Saint Mary’s, another critical game that not only earned the Gaels a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title but also propelled them into the Top 25 at No. 21 for the first time in 2023.
Miami, ranked 22, is back in the AP poll after recent victories against Florida State and Boston College. In contrast, BYU has slid out of the rankings due to three losses in four games following the season-ending injury to their sharpshooting guard Richie Saunders, while Louisville also exited the poll after losses to North Carolina and Clemson.
Conference Landscape
The rankings reflect a diverse conference landscape, with the Big 12, Big Ten, and Southeastern Conferences each featuring five ranked teams, while the ACC has four. The Big East and West Coast Conferences each contribute two teams, and both the Mid-American Conference and Atlantic 10 hold one ranked representative.
