Drew Peterson departs Celtics to team up with Hornets on a two-way contract

NBA Offseason Shift: Drew Peterson Joins Charlotte Hornets

In a notable shift within the NBA landscape this offseason, Drew Peterson, a forward who was part of the Boston Celtics’ roster, is set to embark on a new chapter with the Charlotte Hornets. According to reports by Shams Charania of ESPN, Peterson has reached an agreement on a two-way contract with the Hornets, marking his departure from Boston as the team navigates a busy free agency period.

Peterson’s Journey and Performance

Peterson, who turned 25 this year, has been with the Celtics for the past two seasons, primarily through a two-way deal. His playing time during the 2023-24 NBA season was limited, as he saw the court for just three games while largely competing with the Maine Celtics in the G League. Conversely, the previous season granted him more chances to showcase his skills, where he participated in 25 games and averaged 2.2 points per game.

An impressive shooter from beyond the arc, Peterson has recorded a stellar 42.1 percent success rate on three-pointers during his time across 28 NBA games. His transition to Charlotte will bring him under the guidance of former Celtics assistant Charles Lee, who has taken the helm as the head coach of the Hornets.

Changes in the Celtics Roster

The Celtics have made significant roster changes this offseason, having signed both Amari Williams and Max Shulga, their second-round picks from the 2025 NBA Draft, to two-way contracts. Additionally, with Miles Norris already on a similar deal, Boston has reached its limit for two-way player slots, making Peterson’s exit more probable.

Others leaving the Celtics, including Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet, illustrate the team’s ongoing transformation. As veteran Al Horford also considers free agency options, the Celtics look to redefine their lineup and strategy ahead of the upcoming season.
