Draper Defends His Focused Play in US Open Mixed Doubles Amid Criticism

Jack Draper Addresses Backlash at the 2025 US Open

Jack Draper recently addressed the backlash he received for being intense during the inaugural mixed doubles event at the 2025 US Open, which kicked off in New York this week. The tournament, featuring some of the top singles talent, has faced scrutiny for its format, particularly because it includes only a handful of dedicated doubles teams. Among those, the pairing of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori stands out as the only purely doubles duo in a field dominated by singles players.

Competitors’ Perspectives

Interestingly, many competitors, including prominent players like Carlos Alcaraz, view the event as more of a practice opportunity. Alcaraz, who has openly mentioned using mixed doubles as a way to prepare for upcoming matches, has similarly received criticism for his laid-back stance.

Opening Round Highlights

In the opening round, Alcaraz and his partner Emma Raducanu were bested by Draper and American Jessica Pegula, who won decisively with a scoreline of 4-2, 4-2, showcasing Draper’s serious commitment to the game. Notably, Draper displayed a high level of focus, even directing powerful shots at Raducanu.

Continued Success and Criticism

Continuing with the same energy in the second round, Draper triumphed over Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev, again with a score of 4-1, 4-1, demonstrating his determination to succeed. Despite his evident drive, some spectators were less than thrilled with what they perceived as an overly serious demeanor in what is largely regarded as an exhibition event. Draper, however, expressed his views, suggesting that there is no harm in being highly focused, even amidst the event’s exhibition label.

“It’s a bit of an exhibition format but winning matters to me,” Draper stated. “This is a great opportunity to earn some points before the next matches. I don’t see why being focused should be criticized. If I’m enjoying the competition and performing well, that’s what’s important.”

Building Connections

Draper and Pegula’s connection grew throughout the tournament, as they discovered their shared tendency to keep to themselves.

“We both have a similar mindset when it comes to focus. I see her with her headphones on, just like I am, and it seems we’re not that into small talk,” Draper noted while smiling.

Pegula added humorously how her headphones help her avoid conversations when she prefers solitude.

Looking Ahead

Now, having advanced to the semi-finals, Draper and Pegula will face top players Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, vying for a coveted spot in the championship match as they continue their mixed doubles campaign.
