Boxing Scandal: Francisco Rodriguez Jr. Faces Doping Allegations
In a surprising twist in the boxing world, Francisco Rodriguez Jr., the 31-year-old Mexican boxer, made headlines not just for his stunning victory over Galal Yafai in June but also for a serious doping scandal that unfolded afterwards. Rodriguez emerged victorious against Yafai, an Olympic gold medalist, via a points decision, marking Yafai’s initial defeat as a professional fighter.
However, the victory was overshadowed by the revelation that Rodriguez tested positive for the banned substance heptaminol shortly after the match. Previous Drug Testing Issues
Adding to the controversy, it came to light that this incident was not Rodriguez’s first encounter with drug testing issues; he had previously failed a test following his bout against Josue Jesus Morales in December 2022. As a result of that failure, which led to a no-contest ruling by the Texas Commission, Rodriguez was handed a 90-day suspension and faced a monetary penalty.
Despite this suspension being recorded in the national database accessible to the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), no notification regarding this infraction was provided to other boxing commissions, highlighting a loophole in the regulatory framework that currently governs the sport.
Response and Rematch
Prior to his highly anticipated match against Yafai, the BBBofC was contacted by BBC Sport for clarification regarding the classification of Rodriguez’s previous fight, but did not respond. In light of the drug test results, the WBC has shifted the classification of the bout against Yafai to a no-contest, concluding that Rodriguez’s positive result stemmed from an over-the-counter energy supplement, and not from deliberate doping. Consequently, a rematch has been ordered.
While the BBBofC’s official stance on the fight outcome will depend on the British regulations set forth following the UK Anti-Doping‘s findings, it’s important to note that any disciplinary measures will only affect fights held within the United Kingdom.
