Dominic Calvert-Lewin bids farewell to Everton, set to become a free agent

Dominic Calvert-Lewin Announces Departure from Everton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has announced that he will be departing from Everton after nearly a decade with the club, with his contract set to expire at the end of June. The 28-year-old forward will officially become a free agent on July 1, after joining the Toffees from Sheffield United back in 2016. During his time at Goodison Park, he has made a total of 274 appearances, netting 71 goals for the club.

Contract Negotiations and Injury Struggles

Despite Everton’s attempts to negotiate a new contract for the 11-time England international at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, the two parties were unable to agree on terms. Injury issues have plagued Calvert-Lewin in recent years, limiting his playing time, particularly in the past couple of seasons. In the 2022-23 Premier League season alone, he managed to feature in just 26 matches, partly due to a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined for several months.

Reflecting on His Time at Everton

This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.

Calvert-Lewin expressed his heartfelt sentiments through an Instagram post, emphasizing that his decision to leave was not made on a whim, as he and his family carefully deliberated over their next steps. The forward also acknowledged the strong connection he has with the club, asserting that his bond with Everton remains intact despite his imminent departure.

Transfer Speculations

Notably, Calvert-Lewin turned down a potential transfer to Newcastle United last summer—a deal that would have included Yankuba Minteh going the other way to Everton. Manchester United had also shown some interest in him, although no move materialized.

Career Highlights

Calvert-Lewin’s career at Everton began in 2016 after he spent time progressing through the ranks at Sheffield United, where he made 12 senior appearances. After making his first-team debut for the Toffees in December of that same year, he went on to earn four caps for the England national team, including participation in the Euro 2020 tournament under manager Gareth Southgate. Despite the challenges he faced due to injuries, he managed to return to form in the latest season, making 32 appearances in the Premier League.
