Djokovic Teases Potential Coaching Collaboration With Tennis Icon Following Split with Murray

Djokovic’s Coaching Changes

In a surprising revelation, Novak Djokovic recently teased the possibility of a significant coaching partnership involving a legendary figure in tennis, following his split with Andy Murray earlier this year. Djokovic and Murray started working together in early 2025, marking his first full-time coaching arrangement since Goran Ivanisevic departed in March 2024 after nearly five successful years with the Serbian star, who has claimed 24 Grand Slam titles.

Collaboration with Murray

Their initial months showed promise but the collaboration came to an abrupt halt in May, just ahead of the French Open, when Murray confessed that coaching did not resonate with him as he had anticipated. Since then, Djokovic has engaged various professionals in a more temporary capacity as he navigates his reduced competitive schedule, largely centered on the four major tournaments.

Future Coaching Endeavors

Speaking to Serbian media at the 2025 US Open, Djokovic hinted at his future coaching endeavors without revealing specifics.

“I’m grinning because you seem to have an inkling of my thoughts, yet I can’t disclose everything at this moment. I’ve been in discussions that might yield interesting developments. You might have an idea who I’m referring to, but let’s avoid mentioning any names at this juncture.”

This statement suggested a connection to Monica Seles, a nine-time Grand Slam champion and one of his childhood idols.

Practical Limitations

While the prospect of working with Seles is tantalizing for fans and analysts alike, Djokovic was clear about the practical limitations of establishing a full-time coaching arrangement at this phase of his career. He articulated,

“At this point, I’m not looking for a constant coach by my side throughout the year given my revised, lighter tournament schedule. It’s challenging to ask someone to make that commitment when my appearances might only number two in a three-month span.”

Current Coaching Situation

Acknowledging the complexities of coaching in the tennis world, Djokovic expressed an openness to bringing notable figures on board for select tournaments, similar to how he did with Murray earlier in the year. Currently, he is working alongside Boris Bošnjaković, confirming that Dusan Vemic, who assisted him during the French Open and Wimbledon, is absent this time but could return for future tournaments depending on their mutual availability and interest.
