Djokovic’s Insights on Tsitsipas and Ivanisevic
Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts on Stefanos Tsitsipas’ recent decision to bring on board Goran Ivanisevic, who is also Djokovic’s former coach. Both players are acutely aware of the dynamics within the tennis circuit, especially regarding coaching changes and collaborations. Djokovic has a long-standing friendship with Ivanisevic, having worked closely with him during key phases of his career.
Coaching Changes and Speculation
After assisting with Elena Rybakina’s training for a short period, Ivanisevic shifted back to coaching male players following a brief stint in the WTA. Speculation about Ivanisevic potentially coaching Tsitsipas began circulating in April, but the Greek player remained non-committal at the time. However, the confirmation came post Tsitsipas’ unexpected exit in the second round of the French Open, where he faced a disappointing defeat.
Djokovic’s Confidence in Ivanisevic
Djokovic expressed his belief that Ivanisevic’s experience would be beneficial to Tsitsipas, particularly in terms of mental resilience, an area in which Djokovic identified Tsitsipas as currently struggling. The Serbian icon noted,
“Stefanos has some ups and downs lately, which affect his confidence. I think Goran can help him focus on what’s essential.”
Technical Improvement and Game Enhancement
Furthermore, Djokovic acknowledged Ivanisevic’s expertise as one of the ATP Tour’s most formidable servers. While Tsitsipas possesses a commendable serve, Djokovic emphasized that there’s always room for improvement. He remarked on Tsitsipas’ backhand being one of his weaker skills, suggesting that Ivanisevic, proficient in dual-handed strokes during his playing days, might offer valuable insights.
“Goran’s understanding will guide Tsitsipas in refining his serve further, and even though he had a two-handed backhand, which is Tsitsipas’ weak spot, I’m confident they’ll find a way to enhance his game overall,”
Djokovic said.
Djokovic’s Personal Focus
As for Djokovic himself, he remains focused on his pursuit of a historic 25th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, getting ready to face a tough opponent, Cameron Norrie, in the fourth round after defeating him just recently in Geneva.
