Djokovic and Sinner Advance at French Open
Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner showcased their impressive skills on Saturday, each advancing to the fourth round of the French Open in straight sets.
Djokovic’s Performance
Djokovic, the seasoned Serbian star and three-time champion, continued his pursuit of an historic 25th Grand Slam title by defeating Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on the iconic Court Philippe Chatrier.
The match, which lasted just over two hours, sees Djokovic, currently ranked No. 1, prepare to face Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the next round.
Despite the distraction of the UEFA Champions League final, where Paris Saint-Germain was playing, Djokovic remained focused, noting how the crowd’s reactions to the football match were audible during his game.
“I could hear once they (PSG) scored… it was quite a result, to be honest,”
he remarked, acknowledging the unexpected overlap of events.
His performance was marked by stability, having only faced one break point and successfully converting a majority of his opportunities, hitting 33 winners against 14 unforced errors.
Sinner’s Continued Momentum
Sinner, the Italian world No. 1 and also on a roll, cruised through his match against Jiri Lehecka, winning decisively with a score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.
This victory marks his continued momentum following a three-month doping suspension, where he reached the finals at the Italian Open before losing to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner is now on a remarkable winning streak of 17 matches in Grand Slam tournaments, having recently triumphed at the 2024 US Open and Australian Open. He is set to meet Andrey Rublev next, who advanced after Arthur Fils withdrew due to an injury.
Women’s Side Highlights
On the women’s side, American player Madison Keys managed to survive a tense match against countrywoman Sofia Kenin. After dropping the first set, Keys rallied and saved three match points to clinch the match with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
“I really tried to dig deep,”
Keys expressed, highlighting her relief at advancing in a highly competitive draw.
Joining Keys in the next round are fellow Americans Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Hailey Baptiste. Gauff, the second-ranked player, comfortably overcame Marie Bouzkova 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) and will face Ekaterina Alexandrova next. Pegula, the third seed, secured her place after a comeback victory against Marketa Vondrousova. She will now take on Lois Boisson, the last remaining French player in the tournament, who triumphed against compatriot Elsa Jacquemot.
