Incident Overview
In an unusual turn of events during a German second-division soccer match on Sunday, a masked individual disrupted the proceedings by unplugging the referee’s video review monitor, igniting discussions about the ongoing controversy surrounding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. This incident occurred while well-known referee Felix Bickel was assessing a penalty situation during the game between Preussen Muenster and Hertha Berlin.
Details of the Disruption
According to statements from Muenster, the fan, who has yet to be identified, exited the spectators’ area, disconnected the monitor, and then retreated back into the stands, clad in white overalls and a ski mask. Although the audacious act could have potentially delayed the match, play continued as the video assistant referee, Katrin Rafalski, was able to reach a decision remotely and communicated it to Bickel. The penalty was ultimately awarded to Hertha Berlin, leading to an opening goal by Fabian Reese, contributing to their 2-1 victory over Muenster.
Club’s Response
In response to the incident, Muenster expressed regret, vowing to track down the individual responsible and take preventative measures for the future. The club noted that early investigations suggested the disruption might have been premeditated. Reports revealed that home supporters had displayed a significant banner during the match, demanding the abolishment of VAR, which read “Pull the plug on VAR.”
Fan Reactions
Despite the chaotic moment, Muenster’s captain, Jorrit Hendrix, voiced some level of approval regarding the fans’ passionate approach, emphasizing their desire to influence the outcome of the match.
“It demonstrates how emotionally invested the fans are and their willingness to fight for a victory,”
Hendrix commented in an interview with the program Sportschau. He underscored the notion that such actions are indicative of deep-seated frustrations with the VAR system, which has faced backlash since its introduction in German soccer in 2017 for often causing delays that disrupt the game’s flow.
