Grigor Dimitrov Withdraws from U.S. Open
In a significant setback for tennis fans, Grigor Dimitrov, a seasoned player and three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, has officially pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing chest injury. His withdrawal comes just over a month after he suffered a torn chest muscle during his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Injury Details
The encounter on July 7 proved to be quite dramatic as Dimitrov had initially taken the first two sets before succumbing to the injury in the third set, ultimately forcing him to retire.
Recent Performance
This latest exit marks a disheartening pattern for the 34-year-old Bulgarian, as this will be the fifth straight Grand Slam tournament in which he has been unable to complete a match. His struggles first came to light during this year’s Australian Open in January, then again at the French Open in May, and previously at last year’s Wimbledon and U.S. Open.
Memorable Matches
Dimitrov’s performance at the 2022 U.S. Open was particularly memorable as he bowed out in the quarterfinals against Frances Tiafoe, despite a hard-fought match, which ended with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 in favor of Tiafoe.
Career Highlights
Earning his spot as a semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, alongside semifinal appearances at the Australian Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2014, Dimitrov has reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 but currently sits at No. 21.
Replacement in the Draw
With Dimitrov no longer in contention, Alejandro Tabilo has now filled his place in the men’s singles draw for the championship that is set to commence on August 24. Additionally, Brandon Holt, who previously made headlines by defeating Taylor Fritz at the 2022 U.S. Open, is next in line should another player withdraw, and he carries the legacy of being the son of two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin.
