Detroit Red Wings Transfer Anton Johansson Back to AHL for Final Games of Season

Detroit Red Wings Send Anton Johansson to Grand Rapids Griffins

The Detroit Red Wings have made a strategic move by sending defenseman Anton Johansson back to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL as he transitions back to North American hockey after competing with Leksands IF in Sweden’s top league. The 21-year-old Johansson, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Draft, has been honing his skills overseas.

In the most recent season with Leksands IF, the towering six-foot-four player achieved a respectable tally of five goals and 12 assists, accumulating 17 points over the course of 42 games. His performance has highlighted his potential for a well-rounded two-way game.

Previous Experience with the Griffins

This isn’t Johansson’s first time with the Griffins; he previously joined the team at the conclusion of last season, where he quickly made an impression by scoring five points and finishing with a plus-one rating in 11 regular-season appearances. Although he participated in three playoff games, his contributions included one assist but ended with a minus-three rating.

Future Prospects

The Red Wings appear to view Johansson as a valuable asset for their blue line in the future, acknowledging that he is a long-term project whose development they are keen on nurturing. His physical stature and defensive capabilities position him as a candidate for a depth defenseman role in the NHL, but the organization is clearly patient and willing to allow him the time needed to fully acclimatize to the North American style of play and improve his consistency.
