Sergei Fedorov’s Jersey Retirement
On a momentous night in Detroit, the iconic No. 91 jersey of Sergei Fedorov will be officially retired by the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. Fedorov, a player celebrated for his electrifying style and pivotal role in the franchise’s history, will receive this honor more than seven years after his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
Announcement and Reflection
Red Wings owner and CEO Chris Ilitch delivered the news of the retirement to Fedorov during a call over the summer, an experience that left the former star feeling overwhelmed.
“Initially, we were just catching up, asking about family and life. I was unaware of the direction our conversation was heading until Chris began outlining our shared history – our victories, our challenges, and the journey to success. I was truly taken aback; a flood of memories came rushing back, recalling our struggles and the surge of joy after clinching our first Stanley Cup.”
Honoring a Legacy
As the special occasion nears, Fedorov articulated his appreciation for the passionate Red Wings fan base in a moving letter addressed to Hockeytown. The Red Wings organization will honor Fedorov not only for his spectacular achievements with the team, including pivotal contributions to its Stanley Cup wins in 1997, 1998, and 2002 but also for accolades throughout his career.
He received the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player in 1994, secured the Lester B. Pearson Award, and twice claimed the Frank J. Selke Trophy for being the league’s top defensive forward. Fedorov was recognized for his exceptional talent with six NHL All-Star Game selections and made the prestigious list of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017.
