Detroit Red Wings Launch Historic Jersey to Celebrate 100 Years

Detroit Red Wings Celebrate 100th Anniversary

In a special ceremony on Monday, the Detroit Red Wings marked their 100th anniversary by unveiling a striking new jersey. This celebratory design is set to be worn during over a dozen home games this season, reflecting a century of rich history in Hockeytown.

Franchise History

Originally known as the Detroit Cougars when they joined the NHL back in 1926, the franchise went through several name changes, becoming the Falcons for two seasons before adopting the Red Wings title for the 1932-33 season.

Significance of the New Jersey

Ryan Gustafson, the CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, emphasized the significance of the new uniforms in a recent press release.

“Fans of the Red Wings have always held the Winged Wheel in high regard, and our goal with the Centennial jersey is to honor its storied past,”

said Gustafson. He highlighted that the design connects to the team’s deep-rooted traditions while celebrating this important milestone authentically through distinctive details.

Design Features

The jersey employs a classic Winged Wheel look, enriched by historical elements that narrate the franchise’s journey. A nod to the original ‘Olde English D’ worn by the Cougars can be found on the pants and the jock tag, while the font for the player numbers is reminiscent of those used during the Cougars’ 1927-28 season. Additionally, the design features sleeve and sock striping that pays homage to the Falcons.

One of the standout details is the use of the initial Winged Wheel logo design, which was in use from 1932 to 1948. Other enhancements include a traditional lace-up collar, matte red helmets, and commemorative graphics that note the franchise’s 11 Stanley Cup victories embroidered on the inner hem. A modern twist is added with faux leather patches and a refreshed Hockeytown logo.

Upcoming Matches

Fans can look forward to seeing the new Centennial jersey in action for the first time during the home opening match on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens, an Original Six rival. Historically, the Red Wings and Canadiens have engaged in 612 regular-season encounters, with Detroit holding a record of 219-291-6 against Montreal, as well as facing them in playoffs with Montreal holding a slight edge at 33-29.
