Derek Chisora’s World Title Hopes Revived with WBO Approval for Joseph Parker Trilogy Fight

Derek Chisora’s Triumphant Return

Derek Chisora is set to revive his world-title aspirations thanks to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) approving a potential trilogy bout against Joseph Parker. The WBO interim heavyweight champion Parker is gearing up for a September return to the ring, and this matchup could very well be on the horizon.

Recent Developments

According to WBO president Gustavo Olivieri, Parker has the option to defend his interim title against any contender rated in the organization’s top 15, which includes Chisora, currently positioned as the seventh-ranked heavyweight.

Chisora, with a career record of 36 wins and 13 losses, is preparing for what could be a momentous 50th fight, given the stakes involved. Both Chisora and Parker are represented by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, which is strategizing for upcoming engagements.

Parker is also lined up as the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk, the unified heavyweight champion, who is set to face Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on July 19.

Past Encounters

Parker, who has previously claimed victory over Chisora in two encounters—first with a split decision in 2021 and then by unanimous decision the following year—has shown a willingness to engage in a third fight, as confirmed by his promoter David Higgins in a statement to Sky Sports.

Fighter Profiles

Since those victories, Parker has achieved notable successes against fighters such as Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole. In contrast, Chisora, now at the age of 41, has had a resilient comeback since facing Parker, with just one loss in his last several bouts. He has triumphed against opponents including Kubrat Pulev, Gerald Washington, Joe Joyce, and secured a win over Otto Wallin earlier this year.

Chisora’s last attempt at heavyweight gold occurred in December 2022, when Tyson Fury defeated him in a title defense at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The details surrounding this potential trilogy are keenly anticipated, as both fighters aim to solidify their standings in an intensely competitive heavyweight division.
