Derek Chisora Suggests Tyson Fury Should Face Cousin Hughie Following Split with Uncle

Chisora’s Insights on Fury Family Matchup

Former rival Derek Chisora has expressed his thoughts on a potential matchup between Tyson Fury and his cousin Hughie Fury, particularly after Tyson’s tumultuous split from his uncle and trainer, Peter Fury, back in 2015. This insight came during a recent interview with World Boxing News, many years after Tyson’s landmark victory over Wladimir Klitschko in Dusseldorf—an event that not only crowned Tyson as the best heavyweight in boxing at the time but also marked the end of Peter’s involvement in his training career.

Speculation Surrounding the Split

In the aftermath of that monumental win, communication from Peter Fury, who had been a constant source of updates for WBN, seemed to dry up abruptly, leading to speculation surrounding the reasons for their rift. While various unconfirmed whispers have circulated, much of the specific details about the split remain shrouded in mystery.

Chisora’s Proposition

Chisora, however, believes that a family fight could be the perfect remedy to the tension.

“I think he should fight his cousin,”

Chisora remarked, questioning why Tyson wouldn’t take the opportunity to face Hughie amidst the fallout with Peter. He added that Fury’s return to the ring should focus on rebuilding his skills after a prolonged hiatus from boxing, suggesting that Tyson should take on some easier opponents this year, with plans for a larger challenge by December.

Fury’s Comeback Journey

Tyson Fury notably faced a difficult period totaling 31 months away from the sport, during which he struggled with weight issues before making a dramatic comeback by losing eight stone. Chisora acknowledged Fury’s hard work in refining his skills during this transformation, stating,

“He boxed okay… he’s quite good when he’s at his best.”

Hughie’s Achievements and Challenges

By May of that same year, Hughie Fury had achieved notable success by clinching the British heavyweight title after recovering from a disappointing title challenge. Chisora’s proposition for a clash between the two cousins for the Lonsdale Belt seemed timely but ultimately did not materialize. Instead, Tyson faced Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta, culminating in his clash with Deontay Wilder in December 2018, which would change the course of his career.

Current Status of the Fury Cousins

As Tyson has since regained the heavyweight title and established himself as a dominant figure, Hughie has grappled with personal setbacks, including health issues that have hampered his progression in the sport. As of 2025, Hughie Fury continues to fight, yet he struggles to maintain relevance in the heavyweight division as Tyson has retired from boxing altogether.
