Dereck Lively II of the Mavericks to undergo surgery, sidelining him for the season

Dallas Mavericks Face Setback with Dereck Lively II’s Injury

In a significant setback for the Dallas Mavericks, center Dereck Lively II will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025-26 season due to a surgical procedure on his right foot, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The third-year player has struggled with ongoing discomfort, appearing in just seven games this season before being ruled out since November 22.

Impact on the Team

Lively, known for his defensive presence, has averaged 1.6 blocks per game and played a vital role in the Mavericks’ frontcourt. However, his absence adds to a string of injury woes that have impacted the team early in the season.

The Mavericks’ challenges have been compounded by the injury status of other key players. Veteran forward Anthony Davis has recently returned after a period sidelined but has only managed to participate in 10 of the team’s 25 games, showcasing his scoring and rebounding abilities with averages of 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. Davis has played consistently since December 1, helping the team win three out of four recent matches.

Additionally, point guard Kyrie Irving remains yet to make his season debut as he continues healing from a torn ACL sustained last season. Fellow center Daniel Gafford‘s participation has been limited, as he’s also battling an ankle injury and has featured in only 15 games. Klay Thompson, dealing with chronic knee soreness, missed the Mavericks’ last game against Houston, although he has appeared in 23 contests this season.

Organizational Turmoil

This latest news regarding Lively appears to be another blow for a Mavericks team that has faced considerable turbulence since trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers last season. Following that trade, Dallas opted for a major shift, selecting promising talent Cooper Flagg with the first overall draft pick. However, turmoil within the organization has continued, including the departure of former general manager Nico Harrison and persistent trade speculation surrounding Anthony Davis.

Currently, the Mavericks are struggling with a record of 9-16, placing them at the 11th spot in the competitive Western Conference. They have already been eliminated from the Group Play stage of the NBA Cup, adding to their frustration as the season unfolds.
