Wilder’s Career Plans Remain Steadfast
Deontay Wilder’s manager, Shelly Finkel, has reassured fans that the heavyweight contender’s career plans remain intact despite recent rumors surrounding a potential match against former UFC champion Francis Ngannou. In an interview with World Boxing News (WBN), Finkel emphasized that while the buzz about a crossover fight continues, Wilder’s focus is steadfastly set on traditional boxing and enhancing his impressive win record.
“Yes, that’s still the plan,” Finkel stated, affirmatively dismissing distractions stemming from the Ngannou discussions. “Deontay will compete again this year and has plans for a significant event in 2026.”
Wilder’s Aspirations for Longevity
At 39 years old, Wilder reflected on his aspirations for longevity in the sport during his guest appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. Expressing confidence, he claimed,
“I have ten years left in my career. I intend to make the most of it and enjoy every moment.”
Wilder made an interesting comparison of career lengths across different weight classes, pointing out that the heavyweight division typically allows for longer careers than the lighter divisions. He cited legends like Bernard Hopkins, who competed into his late forties, as examples of heavyweight endurance in the boxing ring.
“Entering the sport at 21, I feel I’ve developed as a veteran. I’m still discovering my rhythm and am far from burnt out. I feel fantastic, and age should be seen just as a number.”
Focus on Championships
While the prospect of facing Ngannou was once a topic of speculation, especially with potential backing from Saudi financing, Finkel clarified that Wilder’s priorities remain centered around obtaining title shots in a heavyweight division currently led by Oleksandr Usyk.
“If title opportunities don’t materialize, then that’s when we might consider Ngannou, but our focus is on championships first,” Finkel stated.
Wilder’s Record and Future
With a current record of 44 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw, including a stunning 43 knockouts, Wilder continues to be recognized as one of boxing’s most fearsome hitters. His declared decade left in the sport suggests that fans have much to look forward to from the ‘Bronze Bomber’, who aims to pursue his championship dreams rather than engage in outside distractions.
