Denver NWSL Team Poised to Hire Nick Cushing as First Head Coach

Exciting Development in Women’s Soccer

In an exciting development for women’s soccer, the NWSL expansion franchise in Denver is nearing the appointment of Nick Cushing as its inaugural head coach, according to multiple reports confirmed by ESPN. Cushing brings a wealth of experience, having previously managed both Manchester City Women and New York City FC (NYCFC) in Major League Soccer (MLS). His two-decade journey with City Football Group began in 2006 when he started as an academy coach.

Cushing’s Coaching Journey

Most recently, Cushing returned to lead Manchester City Women as interim manager following the dismissal of Gareth Taylor in March. Cushing’s tenure with the team from 2013 to 2020 was marked by significant achievements, including a league championship in 2016 and an FA Women’s Cup victory the next year.

Transitioning to NYCFC in 2020, he served as an assistant coach and played a pivotal role in the team’s MLS Cup win in 2021. He later took on the interim head coach role midway through the 2022 season before being officially appointed as the full-time head coach. Unfortunately, under his leadership, the team did not secure a playoff spot in 2023 and placed sixth in the Eastern Conference the following year.

Looking Ahead

Denver’s general manager, Curt Johnson, has expressed the importance of finding a suitable candidate for this critical position, emphasizing that the right individual must also be available. As the NWSL expands to include the Denver team and Boston Legacy FC next season, fans eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the new club’s branding and further developments in its roster.

Boston has already made headlines by naming Portuguese coach Filipa Patão as their first head coach, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in the league’s history.
