San Jose Sharks’ Decision on Carson Wetsch
The San Jose Sharks face a pressing decision regarding their young prospect, Carson Wetsch, as he approaches a critical deadline this month. If the 20-year-old winger is not signed to an entry-level contract by June, he will have the option to re-enter the NHL Draft later that same month.
Wetsch’s Performance and Development
Wetsch, who was selected during the third round of the Sharks’ 2024 NHL Draft, previously showcased his skills with the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League (WHL). In his draft season, he impressed scouts and fans alike with a total of 25 goals and 50 points across 67 games.
The following year saw Wetsch improve his goal-scoring statistics, netting 33 goals, although his overall point total slightly decreased to 53 points for the 2024-25 season. In May 2025, he transitioned to the Kelowna Rockets and was appointed as team captain for the 2025-26 season. His time in Kelowna brought new opportunities as he finished the season with a remarkable 72 points in 65 games, but his goal tally dwindled to 22, marking the lowest since joining the Sharks’ organization.
Future Prospects
Being a 2024 draftee still engaged in Major Junior hockey, Wetsch is permitted to re-enter the NHL Draft this June unless he either signs with the Sharks or commits to a college team. Noted for his energetic playstyle and physicality, Wetsch is recognized for his effective performance in the corners and in creating second-chance opportunities.
Elite Prospects scout Daniel Gee praised him for his high motor and effort, while Ryan Downey of Dobber Prospects highlighted his smart, low-risk approach that emphasizes results over flair.
Wetsch’s aggressive play also contributes to his penalty minutes, adding value to his overall game. If he fulfills his potential, he is projected to become a valuable bottom-six forward in the NHL. However, reaching that level may take some time. In the immediate future, he could provide a significant boost to the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ AHL affiliate, should he choose to continue his development with the organization.
