David Luiz’s Remarkable Comeback
In an impressive comeback to Europe’s premier club competition, David Luiz, the Brazilian defender now aged 38, netted his first Champions League goal in over eight years. The memorable moment occurred during a match on Wednesday when he delivered a powerful header from a corner kick, finding the back of the net to equalize the game at 1-1 against AS Monaco in the 18th minute.
Historic Milestone
With this accomplishment, Luiz has become the second-oldest player to ever score in the Champions League, reaching the milestone at 38 years and 218 days. He trails only Portugal’s Pepê, who was 40 years and 290 days old when he scored for FC Porto in December 2023.
Match Highlights
After Luiz’s equalizer, AS Monaco regained the lead thanks to American forward Folarin Balogun. However, a late own goal by Mohammed Salisu allowed Pafos to salvage a draw.
Luiz’s Champions League Journey
Luiz’s last foray into the net in the Champions League dates back to October 2017, when he scored for Chelsea against Roma in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge. His extensive experience includes being pivotal in Chelsea’s Champions League victory in 2012 and also competing in the tournament with Paris Saint-Germain. His initial Champions League appearance came with Benfica in 2007.
Return to Europe
In August, he made his return to Europe after spending four seasons in Brazil to sign with Pafos, marking the team’s debut in this prestigious competition.
