Dante Fabbro Rejoins Columbus Blue Jackets
Dante Fabbro has officially rejoined the Columbus Blue Jackets after a successful season, inking a four-year contract worth $16.5 million. This agreement, finalized just two days before he would have hit the unrestricted free-agent market, ensures that Fabbro, a coveted right-side defenseman, will remain with the team. His new contract comes with a cap hit of $4.125 million and includes a no-trade clause for the first year.
General Manager’s Enthusiasm
Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell expressed his enthusiasm for the re-signing, stating, “Dante was a great addition to our team last season, and keeping him in Columbus was a priority. He is a smart, versatile defenseman who moves the puck well and can play in all situations. We are thrilled he will continue to be an important part of our club.”
Fabbro’s Career Highlights
Fabbro, who celebrated his 27th birthday on June 20, was originally selected 17th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2016 NHL Draft. Although he played alongside Norris Trophy winner Roman Josi, he struggled to establish himself in Nashville and was ultimately placed on waivers. Columbus claimed him on November 10, and he quickly became a crucial element of their defense, often paired with Zach Werenski. In his 62 games with the Blue Jackets, Fabbro notched a career-high nine goals, accumulated 26 points, and achieved an impressive plus-23 rating.
Challenges Ahead for the Blue Jackets
As the Blue Jackets secure Fabbro, they now face challenges regarding Ivan Provorov, a veteran defenseman and key player who ranked second on the team in both ice time and scoring among defensemen with 33 points. Provorov, 28, has been in talks with the team about a long-term contract since spring but is yet to finalize an agreement, with negotiations suggesting a possible five-year limit from the Blue Jackets’ side. The outcome of Provorov’s situation remains uncertain as the team looks to balance its roster ahead of the new season.
