Danilo Gallinari Announces Retirement

In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Danilo Gallinari, the Italian power forward who enjoyed a 16-year tenure in the NBA, has officially declared his retirement from professional basketball.

“Today, I conclude a dream that has spanned a remarkable journey filled with hard work, sacrifices, friendships, and support from my family and coaches,” Gallinari expressed.

He reflected on the many cherished moments he experienced throughout his career, affirming,

“I will carry these memories with me forever. To everyone who supported and stood by me, thank you from the depths of my heart. I look forward to this new chapter in my life!”

Career Highlights

Gallinari, who was drafted as the sixth overall pick by the New York Knicks in 2008, had a standout career that included significant stints with various teams, starting at Madison Square Garden for two and a half seasons before being traded to the Denver Nuggets as part of the blockbuster deal involving Carmelo Anthony.

His six seasons in Denver were pivotal in shaping his legacy in the league, where he transitioned to play for several other franchises, including the Clippers, Thunder, Hawks, Wizards, Pistons, and Bucks, before exiting the NBA in 2024.

Statistics and Impact

Standing tall at 6’10”, Gallinari was renowned for his shooting prowess as a stretch four in a time when such players were gaining prominence. Over the course of his NBA journey, he compiled impressive statistics, averaging 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, with a career three-point shooting percentage of 38.1%. Across 777 games, he made 1,456 successful three-pointers.

International Career and Future

In addition to his NBA career, Gallinari also had professional stints in Europe and Puerto Rico and donned the Italian national team jersey at last summer’s EuroBasket. Although there had been speculation about a return to European basketball this season, he has opted to retire at the age of 37, marking the end of an era and a significant chapter in the world of basketball.
