Thrilling Conclusion to the 105th New Zealand Open
In a thrilling conclusion to the 105th New Zealand Open, Daniel Hillier successfully defended his lead against Australia’s Lucas Herbert, clinching the championship by a margin of two shots. The tournament took place at the picturesque Millbrook Resort, where the weather posed significant challenges due to high winds and chilly temperatures.
Final Round Highlights
Hillier shot a final round of 67, bringing his total score over four rounds to an impressive 22 under par (262). Herbert, who matched Hillier’s final round score, ended his tournament at 20 under par (264).
With this victory, Hillier earned an automatic invitation to The Open Championship. However, since he had already qualified, the entry will instead go to Herbert, who now heads to Royal Birkdale in July.
Key Moments in the Final Round
Arriving at the final round, Hillier led by a slim margin of one stroke at 18 under par after an electric finish to his third round that included several birdies and an eagle. Despite a bogey on the 10th hole in the final round, Hillier quickly regained control, securing consecutive birdies on the 11th and 12th holes to enhance his lead.
In a nail-biting finish, Herbert had an opportunity to pressure Hillier with a potential chip-in on the 18th hole, but his attempt went past the cup. Hillier managed to maintain his composure, recording a par and celebrating his victory on the green with champagne.
A Historic Win
This victory marks an important milestone as Hillier is the first New Zealander to win his home open since 2017, a fact that he celebrated fervently.
“This is the second-best day of my life after my wedding earlier in the week,” Hillier remarked, acknowledging the intensity of the final moments of the tournament. “This has been the absolute best week of my life. To break the Kiwi drought was very special. I knew I had the game to do it but it was just a matter of not getting ahead of myself.”
Notable Participation
On another note, five-time PGA Tour champion Kevin Na, who has been part of the LIV tour over the last four years, participated in this event as his first back to traditional tours, finishing tied for 19th after a final round of 72.
