Damian Lillard Takes on New Role

Damian Lillard, a renowned figure in basketball and a former star at Weber State, has taken on the role of general manager for his alma mater. This surprising yet exciting development was announced on Saturday in Ogden, Utah, during the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic, an event Lillard hosted.

“My connection with Coach Eric Duft and the Weber State program is deeply significant to me. Witnessing the team’s success truly matters, and I believe my involvement can contribute positively to the program and the players’ development both on and off the court,”

Lillard shared with the Standard-Examiner.

The Evolving Role of General Managers in College Sports

In recent years, the roles of general managers in college sports have gained prominence as they navigate the evolving landscape impacted by the transfer portal and the introduction of athlete compensation through NIL (name, image, likeness) agreements. Lillard’s appointment places him among numerous high-profile individuals stepping into these crucial positions.

Lillard’s Legacy at Weber State

A standout during his time at Weber State, where he played from 2008 to 2012, Lillard earned the distinction of being a two-time Big Sky MVP and is the only All-American in the school’s history. He ranks fourth in all-time scoring and third for career three-pointers at Weber State, solidifying his legacy at the institution.

Future Contributions and Recovery

In his new role, Lillard is expected to collaborate closely with coaches and the athletic department leaders to share his insights, mentorship, and guidance, leveraging his extensive collegiate and professional experience to enhance the program’s trajectory. Currently, as a nine-time NBA All-Star, Lillard is recovering from a significant Achilles tendon injury sustained in April and previously re-signed with the Portland Trail Blazers after a brief stint with the Milwaukee Bucks. His recovery might delay his appearance on the court until the 2025-26 season.
