Damian Lillard Reflects on Milwaukee Tenure and Joy of Returning to Portland

Damian Lillard’s Journey with the Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard is set to conclude his basketball journey as part of the Portland Trail Blazers, a decision that was anticipated but came about much sooner than he or anyone else expected. A significant twist occurred when Lillard suffered an Achilles injury during a playoff match in April. Compounding this, Milwaukee Bucks‘ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo expressed his frustrations, prompting the Bucks to make a surprising move. They opted to waive Lillard and stretched his contract, allowing him to enter free agency, paving the way for his return to the Blazers.

Reflections on His Time with the Bucks

In recent comments, Lillard reflected on his time with the Bucks, where injuries significantly impacted his experience. Notably, he mentioned Antetokounmpo’s absence in Lillard’s inaugural playoffs with the team, followed by his latest injury. Speaking to Jim Owczarski from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Lillard noted:

“You need a bit of luck to achieve success. Health and timing are crucial, but we simply faced unfortunate circumstances.”

Despite facing criticism regarding his performance in Milwaukee, Lillard expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside Antetokounmpo. He highlighted their statistical success as a duo, stating:

“We were the top-scoring pair during our time together. Winning an NBA Cup is no small feat. While some wanted to see a different version of me, I succeeded in producing 25 points per game and seven assists, even while playing with a high-scoring teammate who dominated possession. It feels unjust to suggest I was a different player compared to my time in Portland, where I was accustomed to being the primary ball-handler.”

Excitement About Returning to Portland

Now, Lillard is thrilled to be back in Portland. He shared with Anne M. Peterson from the Associated Press:

“Being back home means every aspect of my life will return to normalcy – my children, rejoining the Trail Blazers, and driving through the very streets I’ve known throughout adulthood with my family, friends, and loved ones around. I didn’t expect this transition to come so quickly, but I’m excited it’s here.”

Looking Ahead

For the upcoming season, Lillard will embrace a different role as he focuses on mentoring young guards such as Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Toumani Camara. He plans to rejoin the playing rotation the following year. For now, Lillard is reveling in the joy of coming home, ready to embark on the next chapter of his career.
