Dallas Stars Trade Mason Marchment to Seattle Kraken, Enhancing Cap Flexibility

Mason Marchment Trade Announcement

In a strategic move to manage their salary cap, the Dallas Stars have secured a deal that sends winger Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken. This decision, announced late Thursday, involves the transfer of two draft picks back to Dallas—specifically a third-round pick in 2026 and a fourth-round selection in 2025.

Contract and Financial Implications

Marchment’s contract reflects a salary cap hit of $4.5 million for the upcoming season, a cost the Kraken will fully absorb. This trade comes as the Stars initiate their offseason maneuvers, which includes the recent signing of veteran forward Matt Duchene to a lucrative four-year extension, also with an average annual value of $4.5 million.

Marchment’s Performance

The 30-year-old Marchment has had a prolific scoring pedigree, notably achieving back-to-back 22-goal seasons while playing for the Stars. However, during their playoff campaign that reached the Western Conference finals this past spring, he struggled significantly, managing only a single goal across 18 postseason games.

Marchment, who joined Dallas as a free agent in 2022, boasts a career total of 76 goals and 189 points in 302 NHL appearances, having previously played for teams like Toronto and Florida.

Salary Cap Considerations and Future Adjustments

With Dallas already nearing the NHL’s salary cap limit of $95.5 million for 2025-26, they find themselves in a tight financial spot, necessitating further adjustments to their roster in the future.

Seattle Kraken’s Perspective

On the other hand, the Kraken, eager to improve after two consecutive seasons without playoff action, view Marchment as a valuable addition. Notable for his physical presence at 6 feet 5 inches, Marchment is seen by Seattle’s GM Jason Botterill as a player who can enhance their offensive strategy, particularly around the net and in the corners of the ice.

As it stands, Marchment will enter unrestricted free agency in July 2026, providing further motivation for his performance as he adjusts to his new team in Seattle.
