Dallas Mavericks plan new arena north of downtown, moving away from American Airlines Center

The Dallas Mavericks’ New Arena Plans

The Dallas Mavericks are making strides toward establishing a new home, as the franchise has reached a preliminary agreement for a new arena location, marking a significant move from their downtown roots for the first time since their inception. This prospective site is located on a 104-acre plot at the former Valley View Mall, situated approximately 10 miles north of Dallas’s downtown area, following the mall’s demolition three years ago.

Timeline and Location

On Monday, the team announced their plans for the new arena, which has a projected completion date of 2031, coinciding with the end of their lease at the American Airlines Center. Interestingly, the franchise had also contemplated a site downtown, specifically where City Hall currently resides, as the Dallas City Council deliberates on whether to renovate or replace this building.

Commitment to Dallas

Mavericks CEO Rick Welts emphasized the team’s aspiration to solidify the location by July, ensuring they can move forward with the construction timeline. Both Welts and Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont have reiterated their commitment to keeping the team within Dallas while aiming to construct a venue dedicated solely to basketball.

Legal Challenges and Future Vision

In addition, the Mavericks are entangled in a legal tussle with the NHL’s Dallas Stars, their arena co-tenant, who are weighing their options regarding future venues—whether to stay at the American Airlines Center or to pursue their own separate facility.

Welts, who came out of retirement for this project, previously orchestrated the Golden State Warriors’ relocation to the Chase Center in San Francisco.

The Mavericks expressed their vision for the new arena in a recent statement, highlighting plans for a vibrant mixed-use development that would include restaurants, entertainment venues, public green spaces, and family-oriented experiences. They foresee this large-scale initiative as a potential economic driver for the Dallas community.

A Rich History

The Mavericks have a rich history in Dallas, having spent their initial 21 years at Reunion Arena before making the move to the AAC, which is slightly more than a mile away. As they prepare for this new venture, the franchise looks poised to redefine its presence within the city’s landscape.
