Dallas Mavericks Focus on Thoughtful GM Search, Interim Leaders Remain Through Trade Deadline

The Dallas Mavericks’ Search for a New General Manager

The Dallas Mavericks are currently in a critical phase as they seek to appoint their next general manager. The decision to let go of Nico Harrison became inevitable following the controversial trade of star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, which was not well received by fans. This time around, the Mavericks are under pressure to choose a GM who can regain the trust of their fan base, especially with an emerging talent like Cooper Flagg in their ranks.

Approach to the GM Search

According to reports from Christian Clark of The Athletic, the Mavericks will take a thoughtful approach to their search for a new full-time general manager, indicating that no one will be appointed before the upcoming trade deadline on February 5. The franchise is looking at a timeline of several months for this crucial decision. In the meantime, Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will continue their roles as co-interim general managers, overseeing any significant moves as the trade deadline approaches.

Trade Discussions and Potential Candidates

The Mavericks are reportedly open to trade discussions involving prominent players like Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and center Daniel Gafford, with Gafford being viewed as a strong candidate for a trade before the deadline. Both Finley and Riccardi are considered contenders for the permanent position, but team governor Patrick Dumont is prioritizing candidates with substantial experience as leading executives.

Among the potential candidates being considered is Dennis Lindsey, the former general manager of the Utah Jazz, who is currently associated with the Detroit Pistons and is known to have the backing of former Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban. However, the Mavericks are expanding their search criteria to ensure they find the best fit for the organization.

Looking Ahead

Whoever ultimately fills the GM role will need adequate time to establish their leadership and prepare for not only the upcoming draft in June but also for a crucial off-season ahead for the franchise.
