Vojtěch Čihař’s NHL Draft Journey
In a pivotal moment for his career, Czech left winger Vojtěch Čihař, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday in March, was selected 59th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round of this year’s NHL Entry Draft, hosted in the City of Angels. As he weighs his options for the next phase of his career, Čihař is considering whether to remain in his current position with Energie Karlovy Vary, where he has participated in 57 games and secured just 10 points, or to make a leap into North American junior hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL, who drafted him in the previous year’s CHL Import Draft.
International Experience and Reflections
Having recently represented the Czech Republic at the IIHF World Junior Championship, where they clinched a bronze medal, Čihař attended a national junior team summer training camp. Here, he engaged in discussions about the NHL Draft and the choices ahead. In an interview with Czech media, Čihař shared his reflections on the drafting experience, stating:
“The Draft is unpredictable, and there’s an anxious anticipation until your name is called. When I heard Los Angeles announce my name, I was thrilled and emotional, especially with my family and girlfriend by my side.”
He noted the emotional atmosphere, especially when he was greeted warmly by Kings staff after donning the team jersey. Transitioning smoothly into his post-draft activities, he felt that the unique circumstance of being picked by the host team added a special touch to the experience, as he was welcomed with congratulations from workers and former Kings players.
Exploring Los Angeles and Future Decisions
Reflecting on his time in Los Angeles, Čihař described the trip as a holiday adventure, where he relished exploring iconic locations like Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Malibu, while also enjoying the pleasant weather.
As he contemplates his future, Čihař acknowledged the importance of progressing towards the NHL but remains unsure about the timeline.
“It’s tough to predict how long it will take to reach my goal,”
he admitted, emphasizing his commitment to making a decision that will best support his growth as a player, whether that means remaining in the Czech league or heading to Canada.
Development Choices and Competition
The Kings have expressed a preference for Čihař to gain experience abroad where he might adapt more easily to the North American style of play. However, he also acknowledged the tough competition in the Czech Extraliga, which could provide a challenging environment conducive to development if he secures more ice time.
“I have to assess where I can develop the most effectively. If opportunities arise in the Canadian juniors, they might cater better to my offensive growth, but I’d also miss my home country. It’s a tough decision,”
he stated, reflecting the dual nature of his ambitions — a desire for personal improvement tempered against his attachment to his roots. Both Čihař and his team are actively discussing the best steps forward, with their decisions heavily influenced by what will maximize his development in the coming years.
Growing Presence of Czech Talent
In related news, Adam Novotný, another prominent Czech prospect, is generating buzz ahead of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, expected to be a top-15 pick. This further highlights the growing presence of Czech talent in international hockey, with Čihař being a key part of that narrative as he carves out his own path.
