Daniel Wessels: A Remarkable Achievement in Collegiate Tennis

In a remarkable highlight to his impressive collegiate tennis journey, Daniel Wessels, a senior from Cumberland University, has been honored as an NAIA ITA singles All-American. This recognition comes from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is awarded to the top 20 players ranked in the final ITA NAIA national standings, with Wessels achieving a commendable finish at No. 17 for the 2024-25 season.

A Milestone for Cumberland Men’s Tennis

Wessels, hailing from Heidelberg, South Africa, marks a significant milestone for the Cumberland men’s tennis program, being the first athlete to be named an ITA singles All-American since 2018. Last season, two of his teammates, Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira, received ITA doubles All-American accolades, showcasing the team’s competitive strength.

Season Highlights

Recently, Wessels was also included in the NAIA second team All-American roster for the previous week and played a vital role in steering the Phoenix to a 15-10 overall record, culminating in a place in the NAIA National Championship Round of 16. Throughout the season, he maintained a singles record of 13 wins and 8 losses, coupled with an impressive 18-3 record in doubles play, largely partnered with Paul-Daniel Meyer.

The duo excelled at the No. 3 doubles position, marking an 8-2 performance, and secured a No. 35 ranking in the final ITA doubles standings.
