Crocker Dismisses Claims of ‘Taking a Dive’ in Controversial First Encounter with Donovan

Lewis Crocker vs. Paddy Donovan: The Rematch

Lewis Crocker is set to face Paddy Donovan again on September 13 at Belfast’s Windsor Park, with the bout carrying the vacant IBF welterweight title. This rematch comes after their controversial first encounter, where Crocker emerged victorious via disqualification.

Controversial First Encounter

The first fight, held in March, ended in dramatic fashion when Donovan was disqualified in the eighth round for a late punch that connected after the bell during a bout designated as a world title eliminator. Before the disqualification, both fighters had exchanged blows, with Donovan suffering point deductions for fouls in the sixth and eighth rounds. However, he also showcased his skills by knocking Crocker down just before the bout was halted, raising questions about the outcome.

Following an appeal by Donovan’s team, the IBF sanctioned the rematch, especially after the previous champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis chose to vacate his title and move up in weight.

Press Event Highlights

At the press event announcing the rematch, Crocker refuted Donovan’s claim that he had intentionally lost the first fight to facilitate Donovan’s disqualification. Donovan, 26, expressed his eagerness to return to the ring in Belfast, suggesting the controversy surrounding their first fight had transformed into an opportunity for redemption.

“This couldn’t have worked out better for me after the controversy of the first fight,” he said. “I’m looking to put on a show and get back to winning ways. You can ask Lewis whether I knocked him out after the bell, but I believe he staged that fall to get me disqualified.”

Responding to Donovan’s accusations, the 28-year-old Crocker remained firm about the legitimacy of the initial decision. He acknowledged he had not performed at his best during the first match but insisted that the disqualification was warranted.

“There’s no debate here; Paddy broke the rules, and that was his fault,” Crocker stated.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Crocker is aware of the challenge he faces and sees himself as the underdog this time around. With high stakes in play, he aims to improve on his earlier performance and prove to the boxing world that he is capable of more.

“I know I’ve got to step up my game. It’s everything I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid, and it’s surreal that this fight is for a title now. I’m a massive underdog, but I believe it’s time for me to shine,” he added.

This upcoming fight represents a significant moment in boxing history, being the first all-Irish world title match, further intensifying the rivalry between these two fighters.
