Criticism Rains Down on Sinner and Raducanu for Overlooking National Teams

Criticism of Jannik Sinner and Emma Raducanu

Jannik Sinner and Emma Raducanu have faced sharp criticism following their choices to forgo participating in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals and the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. These decisions displeased former Australian Open finalist John Lloyd.

Italy’s Success in Team Competitions

In contrast, Italy successfully defended its titles in both team competitions, with Jasmine Paolini leading the women to triumph against a formidable American squad featuring Jessica Pegula during the final match in September.

Reasons for Player Withdrawals

Surprisingly, despite the finals being held in Bologna, Sinner opted out of the Davis Cup, citing a need for additional preparation time ahead of the 2026 Australian Open after clinching the ATP Finals title. Lorenzo Musetti was also absent from the team in Turin. However, Matteo Berrettini, who always seems to rise to the occasion for his nation, alongside his teammates, turned Sinner and Musetti’s withdrawal into an opportunity, laughing off their absence while securing another title for Italy.

John Lloyd’s Discontent

Carlos Alcaraz‘s non-participation was attributed to an injury, leaving Alexander Zverev as the only Top 10 player present at the Davis Cup Finals. Lloyd expressed his discontent with the current dynamics of the tournament and did not hold back in a recent interview on the Mitch Michals Podcast where he described the Davis Cup as having devolved into a farce. He lamented that the passionate backing of Italian fans could not disguise the competition’s deteriorating state.

Lloyd candidly stated, “I’m saddened, not due to Italy’s victory, but because of the direction the Davis Cup has taken. For years, I’ve pointed out that it’s become somewhat of a joke. It seems to be sustained by the allure of international tournaments, regardless of the country’s actual engagement. A competition advertised as the pinnacle of team play cannot be credible when it features just one top-ten player.”

Concerns Over Player Commitment

He also remarked on Sinner and Musetti’s decision to prioritize rest over national duty, deeming it “beyond belief,” considering such choices were unheard of in his playing days. Meanwhile, Raducanu’s absence from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals stemmed from her desire to focus on training with her new coach, Francisco Roig. Lloyd, a former British Davis Cup captain, expressed his disappointment, highlighting that Raducanu missed a pivotal opportunity to potentially lead her team to victory, something he found hard to comprehend in today’s tennis culture.

With his sentiments echoing those of Italian tennis legend Nicola Pietrangeli, Lloyd has raised serious questions regarding the commitment of younger players to their national teams and the implications for future competitions.
