Michael Hunter’s Title Shot Approaches
Michael Hunter is inching closer to securing a long-awaited title shot, even as Kubrat Pulev’s team attempts to disrupt the matchup yet again. Dong King Productions has reported that the World Boxing Association (WBA) has rejected another appeal from Epic Sports and Entertainment, which sought to block the scheduled heavyweight title fight between current champion Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev and the second-ranked contender, Michael “The Bounty” Hunter.
Promoter’s Confirmation
Prominent promoter Don King, who facilitated the fight by winning a purse bid of $1.1 million, confirmed the WBA’s decision and indicated that preparations for the bout will move ahead quickly, potentially happening by the year’s end.
“After enduring numerous obstacles and two failed appeals, we are now focused on finding venues and securing sponsors for the event,” King stated with optimism. “Michael Hunter is thrilled about this opportunity and is determined to demonstrate that he can claim the title from Pulev.”
Hunter’s Record and Background
Hunter, with a professional record of 24 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws, including 17 knockouts, has often been seen as one of the more elusive opponents in the heavyweight ranks. He captured the contentious WBA Gold title in June 2024 with a commanding victory over Cassius Chaney and followed that performance with a knockout win in Mexico. His only professional setback occurred in 2017 against Oleksandr Usyk—an outcome that gained significance following Usyk’s landmark achievements against Tyson Fury.
Pulev’s Title Defense
Pulev, who controversially acquired the vacant WBA heavyweight title in December when he defeated Mahmoud Charr, now faces the necessity of defending his title against a determined challenger in Hunter, who has been yearning for this chance for years. Although the WBA regular title may be viewed as a lesser championship, both Hunter and King see this fight as a stepping stone to more significant opportunities, including a potential rematch with Usyk.
Pulev’s camp has tried unsuccessfully to evade this fight twice, increasing the stakes for the 44-year-old champion to justify his contested title. The ongoing controversies surrounding the WBA regular title appear unlikely to dissipate in the near future, but for Hunter, the long-awaited moment to compete for the title may finally be within reach.
