Conor Garland Celebrates Milestone of 500 NHL Games with Vancouver Canucks

Conor Garland’s 500th NHL Game

On Tuesday night, fans will witness a remarkable achievement as Conor Garland prepares to lace up for his 500th game in the National Hockey League (NHL) at Rogers Arena. The 29-year-old forward will join a select group, becoming the 28th athlete from the 2015 NHL Draft class to reach this significant milestone.

Early Career and Achievements

Garland’s journey to this point has been nothing short of impressive. He made a name for himself in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he dominated for four seasons with the Moncton Wildcats. Over the course of 206 games, he amassed an extraordinary 328 points, solidifying his legacy as the all-time leading scorer for the franchise. His talents were recognized when he was selected 123rd overall by the Arizona Coyotes during the 2015 NHL Draft, not to mention he also clinched the Michel Brière Trophy, awarded to the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Transition to the NHL

Following his successful junior career, Garland transitioned to the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Tucson Roadrunners. His performance in the AHL showcased his potential, as he scored 66 points over 131 games, earning a spot in the All-Star Game in the 2018-19 season. This pivotal season marked his NHL debut on December 8, 2018, and he netted his first goal just two weeks later against the Colorado Avalanche.

Continued Success in the NHL

Garland continued to develop in the NHL, solidifying his role with the Coyotes during the 2019-20 season where he tallied 39 points in 68 games. He followed this with a similar output of 39 points in 49 games during the subsequent season. His contributions extended beyond the club as he represented Team USA at the World Championship in 2021, bringing home a Bronze Medal.

Trade to Vancouver Canucks

In a significant off-season move, Garland was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23, 2021, in a deal that included fellow player Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Coyotes received a package of draft picks and several players in return, leading to ongoing discussions about the trade’s value on both sides. Shortly after the trade, Garland signed a five-year extension with the Canucks, which has proven to be a smart investment, as he has accumulated 207 points in 335 games since joining Vancouver.

Recognition and Future Prospects

Garland has quickly become an integral part of the team, known for his relentless work ethic and leadership qualities. Head Coach Adam Foote praised him, noting,

“He’s there because of his resiliency. He grinds. He competes. He doesn’t quit on pucks. The rest of the group loves that about him.”

He is not only the 68th player drafted in the fifth round to achieve 500 NHL games but also one of 41 players to reach this milestone from Massachusetts, marking a significant personal achievement in his career. With his unstoppable drive, Conor Garland is poised to deliver many more thrilling performances at Rogers Arena in the years to come.
