Conflict erupts as Hawks’ Daniels and Knicks’ Robinson both receive ejections

NBA Playoffs Game 6: Tensions Flare

In an explosive Game 6 showdown of the NBA playoffs, tensions flared when Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks and Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks were shown the door after a physical altercation. The game had already tilted heavily in favor of the Knicks, who dominated the Hawks to secure a 140-89 victory, clinching their playoff series.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, right after OG Anunoby had pushed the Knicks’ lead to an overwhelming 50 points with a couple of successful free throws. In a bid to box out Daniels, Robinson sparked a heated confrontation that led to both players being ejected after referees handed them each a technical foul. The scuffle escalated to the point where an official lost his balance amidst the chaos, further complicating efforts from players and coaches alike to deescalate the situation.

Onyeka Okongwu of the Hawks and Jalen Brunson of the Knicks were seen physically restraining Robinson as the conflict threatened to spill into the crowd. Coaches, including Atlanta’s Quin Snyder and several staff members, quickly stepped in to separate Daniels from the fray.

Coaches’ Reflections

Reflecting on the incident, Knicks coach Mike Brown commented on the difficult nature of maintaining composure in a game with such a large margin: “When you’re ahead by such a significant score, emotions can run high when any perceived injustice occurs.”

The Hawks, who found themselves facing an unprecedented 83-36 deficit at halftime—the largest halftime shortfall in NBA playoff history—certainly had their frustrations evident on the court. Snyder remarked on the altercation, acknowledging the competitiveness of both teams but lamenting their own struggles as highlighted by the lopsided scoreboard.
