Concerns Mount Over Anthony Joshua’s Return as Johnny Nelson Questions His Competitive Fire

Concerns Over Anthony Joshua’s Comeback

Johnny Nelson, the retired cruiserweight champion, has expressed concern over Anthony Joshua’s upcoming return to the ring, suggesting that the former heavyweight champion may lack the competitive desire needed for a successful comeback. After witnessing Joshua’s defeat to Daniel Dubois 14 months ago, Nelson hinted that the fighter’s eagerness to compete may have diminished.

“Boxers often reach a point where they need to walk away themselves rather than be pushed out,”

Nelson stated in an interview with Sky Sports, reflecting on the risks associated with prolonged absences from competition. He emphasized the shift from passion to business in Joshua’s mindset, noting,

“When you’re a young fighter, you can’t wait to step into the ring. It’s been too long for AJ, and I worry that the hunger just isn’t there anymore.”

Historical Context and Current Challenges

Citing past examples such as Nigel Benn’s unexpected retirement mid-fight against Steve Collins in 1996, Nelson warned that losing one’s fighting spirit can occur at any moment. He believes Joshua might be at risk of realizing he no longer possesses the same drive that once fueled him.

Joshua, now 36, has not fought since the loss to Dubois, which brought his professional record to 28 wins and 4 losses, including two stoppage defeats. His previous setbacks included a surprising TKO loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019, followed by defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in two matches held in 2021 and 2022.

Future Prospects

Despite these challenges, discussions are ongoing regarding a match with Tyson Fury, the heavyweight champion who recently hinted at a potential return to the sport after briefly retiring earlier this year. However, analysts believe that should a clash between Joshua and Fury happen, it will likely follow another fight for Joshua first.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that fans may see Joshua re-enter the ring under the Matchroom banner before this year concludes, which could include a spot on a prominent undercard. Remaining significant boxing events for 2026 involve a highly anticipated rematch between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn set for November 15, upcoming showcases in Saudi Arabia in December, and a proposed event in Ghana, which may serve as a testing ground for a potential fight for Joshua in Africa next year.

The boxing community continues to watch and speculate about Joshua’s next steps as he aims to spark a resurgence in his career.
