Columbus Blue Jackets Secure Charlie Coyle with Contract Extension
In a notable move for the franchise, the Columbus Blue Jackets have secured center Charlie Coyle with a six-year contract extension valued at $36 million, announced on Tuesday morning. This agreement ensures the 34-year-old will remain with the team through the 2031-2032 NHL season.
Coyle’s Journey to Columbus
Coyle’s journey to Columbus has been quite dynamic. Originally drafted 28th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 NHL Draft, he made his NHL debut two seasons later, although it was with the Minnesota Wild after being traded in 2011. This trade was part of a significant deal involving sending defenseman Brent Burns and a 2012 second-round draft pick to the Sharks.
In his inaugural NHL season in 2012-2013, Coyle played 37 games and recorded eight goals along with six assists. Over his extensive 14-year career, which includes tenures with teams such as the Wild, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, and, most recently, the Blue Jackets, he has appeared in a total of 1,032 games. He heads into the 2026-2027 season with impressive stats of 209 goals and 334 assists, accumulating 543 points in total.
Trades and Adaptability
Coyle’s career has seen him traded multiple times. After spending five and a half years with the Wild, he was dealt to the Bruins in February 2019 in exchange for Ryan Donato and a fifth-round pick. He later moved to the Avalanche for a brief stint before ultimately being traded to the Blue Jackets, demonstrating his adaptability and resilience on the ice.
Management’s Enthusiasm
Columbus’ President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Don Waddell, expressed his enthusiasm about the extension, stating:
“Charlie made a tremendous impact on and off the ice for us last season. Keeping him in Columbus was a priority. He embodies professionalism and reliability, and his leadership qualities are extremely valuable in our league. We are excited to have him as a pivotal part of the Blue Jackets for many more years to come.”
With this lucrative extension, Coyle can approach his future in Columbus with confidence, as he will earn $6 million a year, marking a significant milestone in his career.
