Colorado Avalanche Secures Sam Malinski with Contract Extension

In a notable move to secure their defensive lineup, the Colorado Avalanche have announced a four-year contract extension for Sam Malinski, a 27-year-old defenseman who has enjoyed a standout season. The new deal, valued at $19 million, carries an annual cap hit of $4.75 million.

Malinski’s Impressive Season

Malinski has already achieved personal bests during this season, tallying 21 assists and accumulating 24 points, with average ice time reaching 16 minutes and 43 seconds per game. Ranking second among the team’s defensemen in assists, he trails only Cale Makar, the reigning Norris Trophy winner.

Management’s Praise

Chris MacFarland, the Avalanche’s general manager, praised Malinski’s contributions, stating, “Sam is a hard-working defenseman who has great skating and puck-moving ability. His commitment to the defensive side of the game has turned him into a reliable defenseman for us.”

This contract extension reflects the organization’s trend of recognizing and rewarding its emerging talents.

Recent Contract Extensions

Earlier this season, just days after scoring his first NHL overtime goal, Gavin Brindley received a two-year contract extension. Brindley, standing at 5-foot-8 and weighing 173 pounds, was acquired by Colorado as part of a trade involving players Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood. Additionally, just three months prior, Martin Necas signed a significant eight-year, $92 million extension set to last through 2034.

Malinski’s Journey to the Avalanche

Malinski joined the Avalanche as a college free agent in March 2023 and quickly became a key player on the roster, solidifying his position on the blueline since the start of the 2024-25 season. Over the course of 149 regular-season games, he has recorded a total of 38 assists and 11 goals. Last season, he contributed one assist in five playoff games for Colorado against the Dallas Stars.

The Minnesota native, who played for Cornell University between 2019 and 2023, served as team captain in his final year, highlighting his leadership qualities and talent on the ice.
