Oscar Collazo Defends Titles

In a surprising turn of events within the boxing ring, Oscar Collazo successfully defended his WBO and WBA strawweight titles, securing a victory by way of a 7th round stoppage against Jayson Vayson. Vayson, who came into the match with a record of 14 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, was performing admirably, even managing to land strong body shots after recovering from an early knockdown caused by Collazo’s check hook in the first frame of the bout.

Unexpected Twist in the Fight

Despite this, the fight took an unexpected twist when Vayson’s corner decided to halt the match, though at that moment, Vayson seemed capable of continuing. He expressed his disappointment, stating:

“They thought I was groggy, but I wanted to fight. I respect the corner’s decision for the safety of the boxer… I felt the punches in my body, but I thought I could manage it.”

Collazo’s Title Run

Collazo, fighting out of Puerto Rico, has now recorded his third consecutive win by stoppage since becoming a champion in 2023. His title run began in May when he defeated Melvin Jerusalem to win the WBO belt, and he added the WBA title to his collection with a knockout of Knockout CP Freshmart in November 2024. Following the fight, Collazo reflected on his performance, noting his strategy:

“I was putting pressure on, I was picking my shots. I saw he was slowing down and I wanted to pick my shots in that round and it got stopped.”

Co-Feature: Gabriela Fundora Shines

In the evening’s co-feature, Gabriela Fundora, the undisputed women’s flyweight champion, demonstrated her prowess by dominating Alexas Kubicki. The fight concluded with a 7th round stoppage, following a commanding performance from Fundora, who overwhelmed Kubicki with effective combinations. Kubicki had stepped in last minute to replace Ayelen “Piru” Granadino, who faced visa issues preventing her entry into the United States. Kubicki put up a valiant effort but ultimately took too much punishment, leading to the fight being stopped to protect her from further injury.
