Cole Caufield makes history as the first Canadiens player to score 50 goals since 1990

Historic Achievement for Cole Caufield

In a remarkable achievement for the Montreal Canadiens, Cole Caufield has made history by becoming the first player in over 30 years to net 50 goals in a single season. On Thursday night, Caufield reached this milestone with his goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a feat not accomplished since Stephane Richer hit the mark back in 1990 – a noteworthy span covering 35 seasons.

“Whenever he has a chance to shoot it, there’s a high chance it’s going in,”

commented Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki about Caufield’s consistent scoring ability, underscoring how well his teammate is performing this season.

Joining an Elite Group

At just 25 years old and hailing from Wisconsin, Caufield now ranks among an elite group of players in the franchise’s history, being only the seventh player to score 50 goals. This exclusive club includes legendary names such as Guy LaFleur, who achieved this feat six times, and others like Maurice Richard, Steve Shutt, Bernie Geoffrion, and Pierre Larouche.

Race for the Maurice Richard Trophy

Currently, Caufield is in a tight race for the coveted Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, competing closely with Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche for the title of the NHL’s leading goal-scorer. With 86 points tallied in just 77 games thus far, Caufield has already surpassed his previous career-best by 16 points, and his exceptional performance has been vital in propelling the Canadiens toward the playoffs.

“We’re focused on our team game and winning games, and I think individual stuff comes with that,”

Caufield stated, reflecting a philosophy echoed by coach Martin St. Louis, a Hall of Fame player himself. He emphasized that focusing on the right aspects of the game leads to more opportunities on the ice, a clear indication of his teamwork mindset.
