Coco Gauff Parts Ways with Coach Matthew Daly
Coco Gauff, a two-time major winner and currently ranked No. 3 in the world, has parted ways with her coach Matthew Daly just days before the US Open begins. This heartfelt decision comes as Gauff prepares for one of the most prestigious competitions in tennis.
Daly confirmed the news to noted tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg, stating that the separation occurred “recently,” but he referred any formal announcements back to Gauff herself.
Expressing his admiration for the young athlete, Daly commented,
“I only have good things to say about Coco, and I truly enjoyed our time together.”
Coaching Journey and Achievements
Daly joined Gauff’s team last year after her split with Brad Gilbert following a lackluster performance at the same tournament. Known for his expertise in grip techniques, Daly worked closely with Gauff and her longtime coach, Jean-Christophe Faurel, to improve various aspects of her game, particularly her service grip.
Their collaborative efforts bore fruit, as Gauff clinched the China Open title and later triumphed at the WTA Finals.
Throughout this season, Gauff, under the combined tutelage of Daly and Faurel, achieved notable highlights, including a victory at the French Open and runner-up finishes at two major events in Madrid and Italy. This month, she also added a doubles title to her accolades at the Canadian Open alongside McCartney Kessler.
Future Prospects
While Gauff has not publicly disclosed any changes to her coaching staff, her recent practice sessions featured Faurel alongside Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics expert with a notable history of aiding the world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Despite her impressive career thus far, Gauff has faced some challenges with her serve post-Paris, winning only four matches across four tournaments.
As the US Open’s main draw is set to commence this Sunday in Queens, Gauff, who is the defending champion, will first partake in an exhibition game at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night.
