Cleveland’s New WNBA Franchise Welcomes Allison Howard as President

Cleveland’s New WNBA Franchise

Cleveland’s soon-to-launch WNBA franchise has made a significant move by appointing Allison Howard as its inaugural president, as announced in a press release on Tuesday. Howard, who is currently the executive vice president and chief commercial officer for the Cleveland Cavaliers, brings a wealth of experience to this new role. Previously, she held the position of president for the Kansas City Current, a team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), where she was instrumental in establishing the franchise ahead of its debut season.

Howard’s Vision and Responsibilities

In her new position with Cleveland’s WNBA team — which is yet to receive a formal name — Howard has expressed enthusiasm, aiming to cultivate the team into a point of pride for the local community. The franchise is expected to commence its games in 2028, allowing Howard a three-year period to lay the groundwork for the organization. As a result, she will continue her responsibilities with the Cavaliers until the conclusion of the 2025-26 NBA season before fully transitioning to her role with the WNBA team.

Howard’s leadership will encompass overseeing all facets of the franchise’s business operations, as highlighted in the team’s announcement. Joining her on the management team are Kiersten Green, appointed as vice president of ticket sales and service, and Tamzin Barroilhet, who will take on the role of senior vice president of corporate partnerships and commercial strategy.

Expansion of the WNBA

Cleveland’s WNBA franchise was confirmed as an expansion team in June, with plans to host its games at Rocket Arena starting in 2028. This marks a notable development not just for Cleveland, but also signifies the league’s growth, as new franchises are also being established in Detroit and Philadelphia, set to begin play in 2029 and 2030, respectively.
