Clara Tauson Focuses on Preparation for European Clay Season Amid Recovery

Clara Tauson Focuses on Recovery

The clay-court season has officially begun, yet Danish tennis star Clara Tauson has opted to sit out the early events of the schedule. Currently training at the prestigious Piatti Tennis Center, situated on the scenic Italian Riviera near Monaco, Tauson, ranked 18th in the world, is focused on improving her conditioning prior to a busy stretch of tournaments across Europe.

Withdrawal from Key Events

The young athlete recently withdrew from two critical WTA 500 events—one in Linz and another in Stuttgart—due to ongoing back inflammation. In taking the professional route of prioritizing her recovery and physical fitness over immediate competition, she seems to be setting her sights on long-term success rather than short-term gains.

“Things are progressing positively in Piatti. Clara has chosen to extend her physical training during this period to ensure she is in optimal condition heading into the European swing of the season,”

shared her father and manager, Søren Tauson, during an interview with TV2.

The Grueling 2026 Season

The 2026 season has proven to be particularly grueling for all players on the WTA Tour, who have traveled extensively—from Australia to the Middle East, then through Europe, and finally to California before heading to Miami—all in approximately three months. This frenetic cycle has taken a toll, with numerous athletes also feeling the pressure to withdraw from competitions.

“It’s been tough not only for Clara but for many of her peers. That’s why she is so committed to this training segment, working closely with physical trainer Michele Ferella, someone she has worked with before,”

Søren added.

Training at Piatti

The choice to base her preparation at Piatti has been supported by Tauson’s history with the facility and Ferella, which has fostered a smooth training progression. Clara and Michele have developed a strong working relationship from previous training phases, and she looks forward to bringing him along to the Madrid Open. With its extended duration, the tournament offers ample opportunity for supplementary training.

Tauson recently shared a video on social media showcasing her rigorous training regimen in Italy, indicating her commitment to returning in peak form.

Upcoming Competitions

Looking ahead, Tauson’s next competitive appearance will be at the WTA 1000 event in Madrid, set to commence on April 21. Ferella will be accompanying her team for this event, and discussions are underway about making his involvement a long-term arrangement. Following Madrid, she plans to participate in the Rome WTA 1000 from May 5 to May 17, leading up to the highly anticipated French Open, which begins on May 24.

Søren Tauson confirmed that Ferella’s inclusion in the team for Madrid and likely Rome is the first step towards enhancing their physical support during tournaments. They recognize that building a robust team involves not just professional expertise but also compatibility and chemistry off the court, and for now, it appears that Tauson and Ferella have found that balance.
