Chris Rooney makes triumphant return to NHL officiating after injury in Round 2

NHL Referee Chris Rooney’s Comeback

In a notable comeback, NHL referee Chris Rooney officiated Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday, featuring the Edmonton Oilers against the Dallas Stars. This match marked Rooney’s inaugural appearance in the conference finals, after he suffered an injury during Game 7 of the Eastern Conference second-round series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers on May 17th.

Details of the Injury

Rooney’s injury occurred just 13 seconds into the second period of that game when he was inadvertently struck in the face by Panthers’ defenseman Niko Mikkola‘s stick while they contended for the puck. The impact forced Rooney to the ice, where he received immediate medical attention from trainers from both teams.

Although he left the ice with a bloodied face and ultimately required stitches for a black eye, he was able to walk off under his own strength, a sign of no severe or lasting damage.

Replacement and Return to Officiating

At the time of his injury, Garrett Rank had been on standby as an alternate referee and stepped in to replace Rooney. The seasoned official, now 50 years old and originally from Boston, expressed optimism about returning to officiating in the playoffs shortly after his injury.

“I look forward to getting back on the ice as soon as possible,” Rooney commented.

His determination was realized as he rejoined officiating duties in Game 4, alongside Dan O’Rourke. They were supported by linesmen Ryan Gibbons and Matt MacPherson, with Graham Skilliter and Ryan Daisy available as alternate officials in the arena.
