Chris Osgood: A Cherished Figure in Red Wings History
In the annals of Detroit Red Wings history, few figures are as cherished as Chris Osgood, a goaltender who etched his name in the franchise’s legacy by winning the Stanley Cup three times. Notably, Osgood served as the backup to Mike Vernon, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy, during the Red Wings’ championship run in 1997. Osgood would eventually take the reins as the starting goalie, leading the team to victory in 1998 and again in 2008, a decade apart.
Milestones and Achievements
On January 14, 1999, Osgood reached a significant milestone, securing his 150th career win in the NHL, all of which had come while donning the Red Wings’ jersey. This achievement occurred during a home game at Joe Louis Arena, where the Red Wings triumphed over the newly established Nashville Predators with a score of 2-1. The decisive goal came courtesy of Slava Kozlov, a member of the famed Russian Five. With this victory, Osgood distinguished himself as just the third goaltender in the franchise’s history to reach the 150-win mark.
The Summer of 2001
Fans of the Red Wings vividly recall the excitement of the summer of 2001, marked by the acquisition of Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek from the Buffalo Sabres, which occurred in a deal that involved Kozlov. That offseason also saw the arrivals of other greats, including Luc Robitaille and Brett Hull. Initially, Osgood was part of the training camp and preseason, but after being placed on waivers, he was claimed by the New York Islanders, where he nearly led them to an upset in the first round against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the playoffs.
Return to the Red Wings
Osgood later joined the St. Louis Blues for a brief period but ultimately returned to the Red Wings as a free agent in 2005. He continued with the franchise, helping the team secure another Stanley Cup in 2008 and coming close to repeating the feat in 2009. By December 2010, Osgood reached a career milestone of 400 wins, with a memorable victory coming against their longtime rivals, the Colorado Avalanche. Despite his impressive stats, being the second-winningest goaltender in Red Wings history, Osgood’s absence from the Hockey Hall of Fame remains a topic of debate among fans and analysts alike.
