The Chicago Bulls Honor Derrick Rose
The Chicago Bulls are set to honor their former star, Derrick Rose, by retiring his jersey on January 24, 2026. The ceremony will take place at the United Center and will follow a matchup against the Boston Celtics later that evening.
With this tribute, Rose’s No. 1 will join the ranks of other legendary Bulls jerseys, including those of Michael Jordan (23), Scottie Pippen (33), Bob Love (10), and Jerry Sloan (4).
Derrick Rose’s NBA Career
A native of Chicago, Rose had a remarkable 15-year NBA career, which commenced in 2008 when he was chosen first overall by the Bulls. His tenure in his hometown team spanned eight years during which he won the Rookie of the Year award in 2009 and made history by becoming the youngest player to win the Most Valuable Player award in 2011, leading the Bulls to an impressive 62-20 record that season and a run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the team’s best playoff performance since Jordan’s era ended in 1998.
After his time with the Bulls, Rose also wore the jerseys of the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Memphis Grizzlies, totaling 723 games and earning three All-Star selections in his career.
Legacy and Recognition
In a heartfelt moment, the Bulls previously acknowledged Rose’s contributions in January 2024, coinciding with his retirement announcement, during which the mayor of Chicago officially designated January 4 as Derrick Rose Day, a sign of the impact he has had on the city and basketball community.
Additionally, Bulls president Michael Reinsdorf communicated the team’s plans to retire Rose’s jersey in a personal meeting with him.
