Chicago Blackhawks Announce Coaching Staff Changes

In a significant move for the Chicago Blackhawks, the team has brought on board Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach amid Jeff Blashill‘s inaugural coaching staff with the franchise, announced on Monday. Vellucci will join fellow assistant coaches Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen, alongside goaltending coach Jimmy Waite and video coaches Matt Meacham and Adam Gill, completing the coaching lineup.

Mike Vellucci’s Experience

Vellucci, who is 58 years old, has a wealth of experience, having spent the last five seasons contributing to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ coaching staff. Prior to that, he served in a dual role as both assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014 to 2019.

His most recent experience includes coaching the United States team that secured a gold medal at the recent world championship, where he worked alongside Blackhawks players Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic.

Coaching Staff Comments

Blashill, the new head coach of the Blackhawks, expressed enthusiasm about Vellucci’s addition, highlighting the beneficial experience from Vellucci’s championship background as a key strength for the team.

“Winning a gold medal for our country at the world championship provides invaluable insights and expertise, making our roster even more competitive. I am eager to get started with the team,”

stated Blashill in a press release.

Blashill’s Qualifications

Blashill, who is 51, took over the reins as head coach for the Blackhawks in the previous month after a successful stint as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he worked under Jon Cooper for the last three years.
