Chelsea considers signing Mike Maignan but hesitant over Milan’s price demands

Chelsea’s Interest in Mike Maignan

Chelsea Football Club is reportedly interested in acquiring goalkeeper Mike Maignan from AC Milan, yet the two sides are significantly apart regarding his transfer fee. According to sources cited by ESPN, Chelsea has received positive signals from Maignan about a potential move to Stamford Bridge, particularly given that he has only one year left on his contract. This situation might suggest a possible bargain for the 29-year-old keeper.

Transfer Fee Discrepancy

However, AC Milan is insisting on a price tag of approximately €30 million (around $34 million), a figure Chelsea is hesitant to accept in light of Maignan’s contract situation.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Situation

Currently, Chelsea is not in urgent need of a new goalkeeper, as they already have five senior players in that position. Last summer, they invested €24.5 million in Filip Jørgensen from Villarreal and have plans for Mike Penders to join from Genk after a loan period. Penders could also be loaned out to gain experience, similar to Djordje Petrovic’s recent loan scenario, while Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected to return from his loan stint at Bournemouth.

Concerns and Future Discussions

Despite Chelsea’s depth in goal, there are growing concerns about Robert Sánchez’s performances following several costly errors, making the possibility of signing a top-quality player like Maignan attractive to the club. Since his transfer from Lille in 2021, Maignan has established himself as France’s first-choice goalkeeper and has demonstrated his talent in the UEFA Champions League over the last four seasons.

While Chelsea is keen on Maignan, further discussions between the clubs will be necessary to potentially align their valuations and facilitate a transfer.
