In a significant achievement for the Charleston Cougars, they captured the Coastal Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Sunday, overcoming the Hofstra Pride with a final score of 68-56. This victory marks the Cougars’ inaugural journey to the women’s NCAA tournament, commonly referred to as March Madness.

Taryn Barbot led the charge for Charleston, showcasing her scoring prowess with 23 points, while her twin sister, Taylor Barbot, added 16 points and facilitated play with eight assists. The Cougars’ defensive strength was evident throughout the tournament, as they held all three of their opponents to fewer than 60 points. Grace Ezebilo made a notable contribution as well, recording a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Meanwhile, Jami Hill added 14 points, hitting four shots from behind the arc.

Despite a rocky start, where Charleston fell behind after an 11-0 run left them trailing 11-18 by the end of the first quarter, they rebounded with a strong second period. Hofstra, the 10th seed, managed to flip the script by outscoring Charleston 22-12 in that stretch, taking a slim 33-30 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Charleston shift gears dramatically, igniting a powerful 14-0 scoring streak that was highlighted by unyielding contributions from the Barbot sisters. This offensive surge allowed Charleston to dominate the third quarter with a score of 21-7, expanding their advantage to 51-40 heading into the final quarter. Taryn Barbot continued to assert her dominance early in the fourth, scoring seven points and helping to stretch the lead to as much as 17 points at 63-46.
Hofstra attempted to rally late in the game, sinking some critical three-point shots during an 8-0 run that narrowed the gap to 63-54 with just under three minutes left. However, the Cougars maintained control, solidifying their spot in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Hofstra’s Contributions
In addition to the Barbot sisters’ contribution, Hofstra’s offensive efforts were led by Emma Von Essen with 13 points, while Chloe Sterling, Alarice Gooden, and Nevaeh Brown added 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Sandra Magolico also contributed defensively, pulling down 10 rebounds for the Pride.
