CFP Management Committee Decides to Maintain 12-Team Playoff Format Amid SEC and Big Ten Disagreement on Expansion

College Football Playoff Structure Announcement

In a recent announcement from the College Football Playoff (CFP) Management Committee, it has been decided that the playoff will continue with a 12-team structure through the 2026-2027 season. This decision comes after no consensus was reached between the heads of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Big Ten regarding further expansion of the playoff format.

Transition to a 12-Team Playoff

The change to a 12-team playoff system was first introduced for the upcoming 2024 season, moving away from the previous four-team format. Leading up to this decision, discussions have highlighted a divide between the major conferences. The SEC has advocated for an increase to 16 teams, favoring a structure that allows for more at-large bids. This proposal aligns with interests from the Power Four leagues, excluding the Big Ten, as well as many smaller conferences that are eager for opportunities in the playoff.

On the other hand, the Big Ten has promoted a more extensive playoff structure that could accommodate up to 24 teams, suggesting a system with several automatic qualifiers from each conference. Their proposal would also potentially eliminate the need for conference title games, instead opting for seeding matches that could generate slots for automatic berths.

CFP Executive Director’s Remarks

CFP executive director Rich Clark remarked on the decision, stating, “After ongoing discussion about the 12-team playoff format, the decision was made to continue with the current structure. This will give the Management Committee additional time to review the 12-team format, so they can better assess the need for potential change. While they all agree the current format has brought more excitement to college football and has given more schools a real shot in the postseason, another year of evaluation will be helpful.”

Format Details for 2026-27 Season

As the format stands for the 2026-27 season, it will comprise 12 teams selected based on the rankings determined by the CFP selection committee, as well as conference champions. The first round of games will unfold on the campuses of participating teams, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals held at the CFP bowl venues. The championship clash is scheduled for January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
